So E3 was terrible right? I mean does anyone disagree? If they do let me know. Anyone? OK, we all agree then.
Now that being said, there were still a few surprising or interesting things that came out of it. This list is just what jumped out at me. I am sure yours will be totally different and I am an idiot and have missed all the best stuff. That’s some attitude mister! Why don’t you write your own list?
Anyway, passive aggressive intro over. Here’s ten things that made me go, “Ohhh” in an interested way.
10. Star Wars 1313
You could easily call this “Star Wars Uncharted”, but what’s wrong with that? Star Wars characters have far more reason to be shooting and fighting than (poor-mans-Indian-Jones) Nathan Drake did. Will the game look like this though? No way.
9. Matt Stone and Trey Parker rip into MS (The South Park game looks nice too)
Microsoft’s conference was terrible. Do they remember that people sometimes play games on their console? Here the South Park creators brilliantly MS’s rubbishness on their own stage.
8. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron
I kind of liked the last one of these, and this looks good too. Bonus points for total lack of Michael Bay!
7. Resident Evil 6
Ok, so Resi 5 wasn’t great, but it wasn’t terrible either. If they build on the good parts they could have something amazing on their hands. If this is even half as good as Resi 4, it could still be game of the year.
6. Far Cry 3
From moment to moment I change my opinion on this game as it looks, by turns, intriguing then formulaic. I think on the whole it has done just enough to keep me interested though.
5. Watch Dogs
Looking like a modern day Assassins Creed (which is what most of us want now), this seems like an amazing new IP. Clever commentary on the interconnectedness of modern technology combines with an amazing looking game engine to make something genuinely exciting that’s not a sequel!
4. Ubisofts Conference Generally
OK, so I made fun of them a lot here, but bad delivery aside Ubisoft’s conferences was by some distance the highlight of the big publishers and platform holders. There really is something in here for everyone.
3. Lollipop Chainsaw
Even when they are just weird rather than good, any Suda 51 games is worth playing just to see the auteur at work. The grind-house presentation here is a real mistake as that aesthetic has become very tired, but the actual gameplay on display here remains intriguing as does the games bizarre sense of humour.
2. The Last of us
This gameplay trailer built on the strong concept set out by the cinematic trailer that preceded it. Crucially, Naughty Dog make such amazing looking games that you really believe The Last of Us will be as good as it looks here.
1. Beyond: Two Souls
I love everything Quantic Dreams has done so far, so this is a no-brainer for me. Looks great. Insta-buy.
